Job Conflicts People Have Who Are over 60 or with Physical Disabilities

Many of us are over 60; others, in our 40’s or 50’s, have a physical disability. Do we stay in our job until we are let go or we retire? And if we retire, is it to rest until we succumb? Or do we decide to take charge of our lives, even take on a new career, and continue to work for our families, our friends, and the society we live in?

I far prefer the latter even with the external and internal obstacles we must overcome.

The external obstacles include the attitudes and viewpoints of younger people who are likely to run the organizations we might like to help:

“You are over the hill, too old; you’re not my generation and don’t understand my outlook. Younger people do.”

There are ways to get beyond this. A critical way is to use consciousness: create a strong intention and remove doubts. In my experience, the fastest way to learn to do this is the Avatar® Course (www.TheAvatarCourse.com; http://pieterkavatar.wordpress.com).

A third method is vital for us whichever other method we use: network, network, network. Internet search engines can give tips from successful networkers on how to find groups in your locality to meet with. People often begin by networking with others whose career goals are similar to theirs. These groups can tell you how to find groups of decision-makers you want to meet – CEOs, for example.

It is important to pay attention to the culture of networking meetings. In most places, the culture includes being interested in the other person, feeling out ways you might help them; and, if you want to pursue matters further, waiting until the conversation is ending to ask if they would like to meet for breakfast, lunch, or coffee in the coming week. If the answer is “yes”, that is considered the time to exchange business cards.

In many places, the culture requires waiting for that second, one-on-one meeting to actually get down to business.

In addition, it is very helpful to find out how to prepare an effective LinkedIn profile and to create one. The profile may need re-working several times. Based on the advice of experts near me, I re-work it at regular intervals. LinkedIn itself has many tips.

The internal obstacles to moving forward are our own attitudes, beliefs, ideas and thoughts, the ones that hold us back. You may be aware of some of them. When they still obstruct us, we are probably only aware of a tip in our minds of an iceberg deeper in consciousness. Some are so hidden we don’t know they are there – “transparent” in that we see through them and act through them without knowing it. They may be old “friends” we feel comfortable with. It can take courage and effort to bring them fully into our aware consciousness so they no longer impede us.

How? The methods that get us outside our ego and mind to feel our attitudes and beliefs are more effective than methods that use thought. There are several ways to get to feelings.
